Bear viewing is a highlight, with brown bears commonly seen along the shores of Southeast Alaska from late July through early September during the salmon runs, while Katmai’s renowned bear viewing season begins in early August as salmon arrive in full force. Black bears are typically best observed from May through July, when they are active along shorelines, estuaries, and forested areas feeding on emerging vegetation and early salmon. Whale activity follows seasonal feeding cycles, with May to June ideal for gray whales and resident orcas feeding on herring and salmon. From July to August, peak whale season brings humpbacks, and even near Anchorage, while September offers quieter cruising conditions and excellent late-season viewing, including dramatic bubble-net feeding displays.
