Top Three Wines to Complete the Yachting Experience

Owning or chartering a superyacht is about the most opulent and luxurious activity you can experience.  Aside from the yacht itself, the magic of the experience comes from the service, the destinations, the food and, of course, the wine.  Selecting the right wine for yachting is an art form.  You want something which parallels the sun, sea and gastronomy without overwhelming them.

Here are our Top Three Wines to complete your yachting experience….

Chateau D’esclans Garrus
Rosé wine was made for yachting.  Like yachting itself, this wine is synonymous with Provence in France’s south.  It is crisp, light and refreshing perfectly cutting through the lingering salt water from your last swim.  It works beautifully with fresh seafood.  Arguably, the pinnacle of this variety is Chateau D’esclans’ Garrus.  It has been described by some of the world’s wine heavy hitters as the best rosé in the world and, in our opinion, we certainly believe it completes the yachting experience.

Nyetimber
When selecting champagne or sparkling wine, we usually head to the French producers.  Yet it was an English sparkling wine which took the honours in a blind tasting of experts in Stockholm in 2016.  The 2009 vintage of Nyetimber beat French heavyweights such as Billecart-Salmon Grand Cru.  This impressive English pinot noir sparkling wine is the perfect wine for celebrating great moments onboard a superyacht.

If losing to an English sparkling wine wasn’t bad enough, second prize in the same tasting went to Australian wine powerhouse Brown Brothers and their Tasmanian produced Pirie.

Rockford’s Basket Press
The Barossa Valley is well known for its big, hearty shiraz wines of which the most globally recognised is Penfold’s Grange Hermitage.  Yet if the appeal of a wine can be determined by the number of diehard fans it attracts then another Barossa shiraz is the winner.  Rockford’s Basket Press is highly coveted and thus can difficult to procure yet it is worth it.  It is the wine equivalent of a romantic evening with a lover.  It boldly matches red meat and game as equally as a decadent cheese platter.

Yet if you subscribe to a it-is-uber-expensive-so-it-must-be-spectacular wine philosophy then we recommend Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s Romanee-Conti Grand Cru from Burgundy, France.
