Modern-day yacht explorers
You might be forgiven for thinking all that can be discovered in the world has been. Yet Todd Tai, member of The Explorers Club, Australia and New Zealand Chapter, lost sight of the shore to discover a great deal on the Queensland coastline.
It was a 1300-kilometre journey onboard M/Y BELUGA and her support vessels, MINKE and ZULU from the Whitsunday Islands down the coast of Queensland and out to Kenn Reef, 500 kilometres of the coast, which finished in the Bunker Group.
Like the story from a swashbuckling pirate movie, the group discovered Swiss Family Robinson style huts on remote islands and shipwrecks of WWII warships plus sailing ships from the 1800s. They dived with sharks, stingrays, sea snakes and fish of every variety and colour. They went beyond the Great Barrier Reef and continental shelf to isolated reefs which drop off to 2500 metres of water.

Aside from discovery and more than a little luxury onboard BELUGA, there was also a very important side to the trip. The group collected plastic debris in all the destinations they visited as part of the Take 3 for the Sea campaign. Ocean Alliance along with Owners, Captain and crew of BELUGA have committed to improving the health of the oceans so much so the Owner has donated the yacht for researchers and documentarians to film BLUE; an emotive documentary fearlessly telling the stories of oceans drowning plastic.
Todd’s expedition is best read in full and if it inspires you to see the world differently or be intrepid then please do not hesitate to contact the team at Ocean Alliance for it would be our great pleasure to make it a reality by curating a superyacht charter itinerary.
